So what are your plans now Paul?

The replacement gearbox recently purchased from the local Mazda agent is in the Mk4 and is performing OK, after two or possibly 3 outings.

When will you test one of the gearboxes  build to your specification in your race car?

Having read the whole thread I can see there is a problem with the gearbox. Paul's very first post says it all.

A 2.8 ratio diff is ridiculous!! It puts so much strain on the gearbox .It's like setting off every time in second. I would love to know what ratio the gears are in that box!

This will definitely manifest in many road cars before too long.

It isn't revs that kill gearbox bearings and cogs it is torque.

I've been involved in Motorsport for a very long time and used to rally a Celica with a 5.1 diff. I now use it on the road and for sprints but it still has a 4.6 diff. I've never heard of any sporting car with a 2.8!!

I think this may come back to haunt Mazda.

Good luck with your racing Paul in whatever you drive!

Well that first gear ratio is why it can move forward then. I know it's a true 6 speed box and 6th gear is direct  ( a good performance car selling point?)  but in all honestly I think it would have been better with a 4.1 diff and an overdrive 6th.

That would create far less stress on the drive train. I haven't driven a MK4 but it must feel fairly odd going from 1st gear to second gear.

I hope everything works out for the customers and Mazda too in the long term.

The Roddison modified gearbox had its first outing in The Birkett 6 hour relay race at Silverstone today, no problems and only very slightly noisier with the new profile of gear teeth.Next outing Donington later this week. The the big test will be The Race of Remembrance at the Anglesey Circuit in November.

The modified box was tested under race conditions by Paul Roddison and Dan Welsh at Donington between 9:30 and 4:30 on Nov 2nd, there were no problems, their laps times were 1.25 on average, 1.22 was the best achieved, passengers were in the car for many of the runs.
The cars next outing is to the Race of Remembrance on The Anglesey Circuit this weekend

Evening all

to bring you up to date we have just done a 12hr endurance race with our mk4 that has OUR RODDISONS modified gearbox fitted. The only problem we had was a cracked exhaust at hr 11 that cost so 20 mins to fix. Up until that point we were miles ahead....

where did we finish? in our eyes we finished 1st 2000cc car to cross the line having done the full 12hrs....we were pipped by a four car tag team so was classed 2nd. How an endurance race have 4 cars baffles me...lol

but the main point is......our gearbox lasted the duration!!!

Hello Paul

Great to hear the gearbox performed well & importantly did not break.

And, none of the Mazda inbuilt "correction" devices, now removed, sending you into the barriers, as before.

Cheers

Keith

PS. Recaro performing well.

Now lets hope that Mazda can do as good a job of sorting out the ND gearbox as Rodders has done and that Mazda honour any early pre-modified gearbox failures. Well done! As to a single car losing out to a tag team of four cars in an endurance race, that just is not right and moral. Can't believe that the organisers would do that

The race wasn't sponsored by Mazda was it?

But seriously though, that is disgusting and makes a mockery of the term "endurance"!

Winning the class would have been icing on the cake, the main thing was that the modified gearbox was up to the job, with visits to Donington - Track Day, Silverstone - The Birkett and now Anglesey for The Race of Rememberance, I would say that equates to a full seasons MAX5 Racing

Paul,

As an Engineer (not in competition with you), I am very interested to know what you did to the gearbox to eradicate the problems. Did you:

1. Change the geometry (such as remove undercuts in the roots of the teeth), or

2. Change the material specification, or

3. Change the heat treatment, or

4. Some combination of these, or

5. Something else?

If you don't want the world to know you can always PM me

I'm sure you will appreciate how much ££££ I'm out of pocket at the min, therefore any upgraded  gearboxes we supply will bring in revenue towards that outlay and for that reason I will not disclose my info.

Hope you understand

I called into Roddison Motorsports on Thursday, the two Mk4 gearboxes re built to the new specifications are now in use, one in Pauls race car the other has been exported to Hong Kong. Three other boxes are now on the work bench, two were broken during racing, the third box was purchased by Paul from Mazda towards the end of the race season, whilst it is still in working order Paul tells me he is keen to bring it up to the new specification, so it does not fail during a MAX5 race.Three more un broken boxes currently in the race cars will be brought up to the new specifications by Paul before the start of next season.

You mentioned that the ND tried to kill you - the brakes cut in under certain circumstances, there is a video showing this after the Craner Curves at Donington elsewhere, is it likely the Spider will do the save thing?
Your TEK night MK4 v Spider last Tuesday was very interesting, thank you.
