Hi folks,

I'm Scott and I've just joined the forum after the purchase of the newest addition to my small fleet!! …..a 1998 1.8 in gold.....

Was looking for a project to do up over the winter but got this one which requires next to nothing. Will replace a few bushes and maybe do a few upgrades but will keep it sensible and reasonably standard at least for now!! Have a Cosworth YB that I'm building in the garage that might eventually find its way into the engine bay.....

I'm a huge car enthusiast and ex-mechanic (now an air traffic controller) who is lucky enough to own a few cars.....

99 Pug 306 Rallye

06 BMW M6

05 BMW X5 4.8iS

89 Nissan Skyline R32 GTR Track car

Have to admit, I'm not up to speed on MX5 tuning which is the main reason I've joined the forum. Hope to learn as I go along...

TT

(Scott)

Nice mix of motors there and certainly going to start some garage envy. Enjoy your new baby.

Welcome Scott.

Your enviable stable looks a bit mental.

Mental is good.

That's called "Racing Bronze" incidentally, and there are few around these days....probably thanks to rot.

You'll discover soon enough the "default " route to get meaningful performance with these is to either supercharge or turbo, with I'd wager, turbo the most preferred.

Basically the engines are "daughters of" the Mazda 323 Turbo, which is why they can, if the mill is sound, take sensible boost well.

Up to circa 240bhp is not unknown before you risk mincing 'boxes & clutches but tbh, in my view, 200 bhp is useable, not to mention safer mechanically.

There are numerous tweaks but in my opinion the BHP-to £ gains are questionable.

Alternatively, all being well, is just recognise the speed in these cars is largely in the chassis & epic brakes, mod that lot, and leave the mill alone bar servicing.

Then just have a ball caning it's nuts off...like a lot of us do.

Don't want to bang on about it as Google is awash with Mk2/Mk2.5 rot issues & fixes as is this and other forums but all I would say is get in there in real depth and check how solid it is in the engine bay/ARB mounting chassis rail areas, and have a good poke at the floor pans, real sills and arches before you start chucking dosh at it. There WILL be rot...it's just a question of degree....from negligible to unsafe.

I've had our 2002 car pretty much rebuilt, and shortly will start all over again with my Mk1.

I'd get onto the DVLA site and check out it's MOT histories in that respect..

It may tell a happy tale hopefully.

Thanks for the advice...!!

At the moment, its all about getting the car sorted for all the silly little bits of trim and fastners that are missing. Nothing major, just a few bits here and there to get it back to looking complete..
Not too fussed about performance upgrades at the minute either as I have the choice of mild to wild in the fleet as it is so might just concentrate on induction, manifold and exhaust upgrades. Had considered going FI but, TBH I'd be better served sinking the cash into finishing the YB and chucking it in...I'm not adverse to a bit of fab and getting stuck in.

Going by your username I'm gonna take a punt and hazard a guess youre from North of the border???? I'm originally from Fife myself but been living in England now for around 16yrs....I miss the snow LOL..

Scottishfiver, one Scotsman telling another to check it over before throwing money at it? What's that all about?

I know. Double standards eh?

If Scott only saw my rebuild the poor man would need a few hot sweet teas and/or a half bottle of Laphroaig

Thank God.

Just dodged a potentially expensive round.

Before we get into any arguments I'll just propose some statements.

All MX-5s are good, we all have our own preferences.

All single malts are good, we all have our own preferences.

OK with that everyone?

If not it's ND and Laphroaig. Say anything else and I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

P.S. How about an OC rally on Islay? Would be some great choices for drives out!

There was also a mint, green mohair hood going too. Silverlake breakers in Hampshire if anyone interested. All hoods £51 it seems...bargain!!
