Thought I would post pictures of my recent efforts polishing the MX5.

Last year I had noticed a few swirls/scratches in the clear coat (from a previous owner) when sunny, I decided to fully prepare the paintwork and very pleased with the results, as you can see below.

I've spent the last 6 weeks in total, washing, claying, compounding with 3000 polish, polishing with a high gloss polish, finishing with layer of wax and sealing with high gloss QD.
Even gave the engine compartment a good clean. All achieved by hand and hard work.

The reflection and gloss achieved is stunning in the sunshine and scratches gone (to the naked eye!).

Hope you like.

Can't wait for dry days to take out.

Yes they are a little, although as it was over 6 weeks, not too bad. Also found the use of good polishing pads to help, as these are firmer to hold.

Well worth the effort and quite satisfying.

Did you never consider buying a DA Polisher?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your comment, especially coming from a Professional!

i did look at DA's but couldn't really justify the expense, given I would only use once or twice ( although since I have completed, the father in law wants his doing!). I also have the time now I am retired.

i do see the benefit in a DA, for the larger flat panels as it would save some effort. Although the feel by hand gives a lot of control, and as said, somewhat satisfying that I did it without the assistance of machinery.

i also found the choice of polish to be a key factor, as over the years I have used many different types with mixed results. The newer products are much more advanced, easy to use and give outstanding results. I am sure you would agree.

Would you mind posting up a pic of the kit you used please?

Dear Injury time,

Thought I would describe below the kit used, as picture wouldnt really help, but can provide if not.

I used Lake Country Polishing pad and Scholl Concepts Polishing Puck, both are good. The Lake Country come in 3 variants (heavy, medium and polishing) depending on what level of cut you need to remove the swirls.

I primed the pads first, as you would with a DA, to make sure enough polish on the pad for each application, per panel.

i found Menzerna 2500 polish to be well suited to the soft clearcoat, as detailed in their product description.

Rest of products are Bilt Hamber, Korrosol iron remover, Auto Wash, medium Clay Bar, Cleanser Polish, Auto Balm Wax and Auto QD.

Lots of clean microfibre towels.

Hope this helps.

Also invested in a good LED lamp for the garage to show up the problem areas, which I set up on a tripod. This is a must to determine the issues, so you apply the right level of correction.

Thanks been out of detailing for a while, kids helped shake off the OCD but the new (to me) NC deserves some correction and the DA is giving me that look
