Millions around the world have been following the developments of Car Throttle’s most loved project car, Phil the Mk1 MX-5, in the famous YouTube series that has stretched the past few years. With millions of views, Phil is unquestionably one of the most famous MX-5s in the world – and we had a few hours behind the wheel!

Phil is no different to many MX-5 projects that start out as a cheap, rusty car and get waaaaay out of hand. Over the years, Phil has worn a turbo conversion, has had a major engine failure on the Nordscheiffle, and now runs one of the desirable and aurally magnificent Rocketeer V6 conversions. We welcomed Phil onto our club stand at the recent NEC Restoration Show, but there was a minor issue… Phil lives in London, and the show is in Birmingham.

Oh, we are kind, generous people, we are. With only thoughts of wanting to help out, we volunteered to drive Phil to the show! And to borrow the famous line from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, ‘If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I’.

Oh no, we didn’t. We did the only natural thing, and went and found some country back lanes to really get to know Phil.

The latest issue of the MX-5 Owners Club’s printed magazine, Soft Top Hardtop, is hitting mailboxes around the country as we speak. Keep an eye out to read about our time with the most famous MX-5, and listen as we recount the glorious noise of that V6 on full song.

For those who haven’t been following Phil’s story, it’s an ideal time to catch up on what you’ve been missing. We’ve included the start point, Click HERE for the full project playlist.
