Haddon Hall or Bakewell Run

Sunday 9th July

• Meet 10.30am Keele Services (Junction 15 Southbound) for 11.00 departure.
• Drive past the services building to the far car park near the petrol station.
• The first few miles are on the M6, A500 then the A50 – after that beautiful Derbyshire countryside.
• The aim of the run is to either visit Haddon Hall or chill out in Bakewell.
• Our first stop is at Parsley Hay in the Derbyshire Peaks – a picnic area with toilets and hot and cold food. The car park costs £1.50. We aim to be there from 12.15pm to 1pm. Perhaps those wishing to visit Haddon Hall should set off from Keele Services in the first group – because we need to leave at 1pm sharp to arrive at Haddon by 2pm.
• The Haddon Hall car park costs £3.00 and entry to the building and grounds costs £14.00. So why visit Haddon? The building dates from the 12th Century. The owners (the Manners family – Dukes of Rutland) left it in 1700 to live in Belvoir Castle and didn’t return until 1925. They updated just one part leaving the rest in a time warp!! There is a cafe in the building. There is also a one-off Artisan and Food Market in the grounds on the day we are visiting.
• Bakewell is a lovely Market Town with plenty of pubs, cafes and bespoke shops. It is a couple of miles down the road from Haddon Hall.
• There is no ‘end of run’ meal planned – but there are plenty of eating opportunities throughout the day. With Chatsworth and Alton Towers close to Haddon Hall, I could not book an afternoon meal for more than 6 cars (lack of parking amongst other things). Pubs simply don’t need bookings – so don’t do them. If you fancy a Sunday Roast I suggest you get a small group together and drop in somewhere on your way home. That’s what we’re doing.
