The Struggle is worth it @ Carnforth Truck Haven | England | United Kingdom

This is a modified version of a run I designed back in 2014. One of the main reasons for the
modifications is because the Windermere Marathon is taking place on the same day as our run with
several road closures in place for a significant part of the day along stretches of my original route in
and around Newby Bridge, Hawkshead & Bowness. Not to be deterred I have added 3 detours in order
to avoid the anticipated choke points. Total mileage: 79 miles.

1st LEG:
A 22-mile journey from Carnforth Truckhaven heading north along the A6 towards Levens Hall for 9.4
miles then west along the A590 for a further 6.9 miles before taking to the back lanes for the final 5.9
miles in order to arrive at the Lakeland Motor Museum where we will stop for light refreshments and
a comfort break.

2nd LEG:
A 26- mile journey from the Lakeland Motor Museum initially heading west towards Spark Bridge for
2.9 miles before turning north towards Colton, Rusland & Sattertwaite as we head through the
Grizedale Forrest detouring north via Skelwith Bridge for 15.5 miles before circumnavigating Grasmere
and Rydal Water as we turn back south along the A591 to Ambleside for the final 8.1 miles where we
shall stop for lunch at Hayes Garden World.

3rd & FINAL LEG:
A 31-mile journey initially heading north for 3.7 miles from Ambleside as we take on ‘The Struggle’ up
to the Kirkstone Pass where weather permitting we should have a great view of Windermere as we
commence our descent back down towards Bowness for 4.4 miles before turning east to bypass
Bowness because of the Windermere Marathon event. We head south crossing the A591 after a further
2.7 miles to enable us to pick up the B5284 and A5074 as we traverse the Lyth Valley back towards the
A590 at the 23.8-mile waypoint. The run finishes at Crooklands Hotel where final refreshments can be
obtained before saying our farewells and commencing your journeys home.
